“It’s not just a painting of pancakes…”

When I started off this painting, I just wanted to pay homage to a favorite food. I had my Mom’s pancakes a few nights before that she’s made us my whole life. I thought the colors of the pancake, the plate, and the butter could make for a good painting while I was eating them, and I took some reference photos.

By the end of the painting, I was choking up thinking of all the things my Mom has done for me in my life. Sometimes a painting takes on a meaning for me when I’m in the middle of it or when I’m finished. Something organic takes place. I started to think of the ways my Mom always spoiled me (and my family and friends) in the best ways. Pancakes on “breakfast for dinner” nights. Pancakes for breakfast after my friends had slept over when I was kid. And to this day, pancakes when family visits. It’s a small, simple gesture of love. I love this one as a little reminder to me to “make pancakes” for someone you care about in whatever ways that may be.

“Mom’s Pancakes” - original is gouache on paper 6” x 6”
